We have grown up as “Generation Lockdown”. We have watched as families grieve the loss of their children who went to school, were walking down the street, were at a concert, were in their own home, or were on a playground. We have started to become desensitized when we read these horrific headlines. We have […]

By Jess Teich and Abby Adelman. We have just spent the past couple minutes talking about the four big themes in a healthy relationship: Love, peace, respect, as well as trust and support. This week’s parsha (Torah portion), vayeitzei, is the best one we could have asked for this Shabbat. Vayeitzei tells the story of […]

The Towson University community came together Monday night at Speaker’s Circle in the middle of campus to reflect upon recent acts of hatred across our nation. Last month, students of Towson Hillel, a Jewish student organization at Towson University, gathered to learn about food insecurity in Baltimore and hand-write hundreds of inspirational notes. Each note will accompany a bag of food that is distributed by the Baltimore Hunger Project. These food packages are discreetly given to school children to take home every weekend […]

Towson Hillel Combined Meet and Greet #4—Challah Bake
Aug 13 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

As for the description, maybe something along the lines of: “Please join us as our “Challah for Hunger” student leaders facilitate an interactive challah bake as we help earmark this special time with your children before they embark on this next step in their lives and educational journey. Please make your challah dough ahead of time. It should have already gone through its first rise and be ready to be formed into challah before its second rise and baking. Enjoy using a favorite challah recipe you already have or give this one a try.”

Easy Challah Recipe

Ingredients:

2 tsp. salt

3 eggs (+ 1 more to use later for the egg wash)

½ cup canola oil

¼ cup honey

6 cups bread flour

1/3-1/2 cup sugar (regular or vanilla sugar)

2 Tbs. active dry yeast (or 2 packets of rapid-rise/instant yeast)

1 2/3 cups hot tap water

Instructions:

Using a wooden spoon and your hands, (or you can use a food processor or Kitchen Aid mixer) combine the ingredients in the order in which they appear until well blended.

A ball should form; if the dough is too sticky, add in a little flour.

Spray a large mixing bowl (one that will allow the dough to rise well) with cooking spray or ½ tsp. olive oil.

Put the dough in the bowl and then turn the dough so it’s coated on all surfaces with the spray or oil.

Cover the bowl with a light-weight towel or saran wrap.

Place the bowl into the oven on a proofing setting or just let it stay on the counter.

After 1 ½ hours, your dough should have at least doubled in size and you can uncover the bowl.

Dust your work surface with flour.

Remove the dough from the bowl and place on the floured surface.

Knead the dough a little bit until when you push it with your finger, the impression bounces back.

Cut the dough into portions to form into desired shapes.

Place formed challah on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or in a greased baking pan.

Cover with towel or saran wrap and let rise for another 1 – 1 ½ hours.

Uncover and use a basting brush to apply the egg wash (one egg beaten with a little bit of water). If using a sugar-type of topping, you can add about 1 tsp. of that in with the egg wash before brushing that on). If you’re using other toppings, such as garlic powder, rosemary, onion flakes, everything seasoning, poppy or sesame seeds, now is the time to shake those on.

Bake at 350 degrees for ~30 minutes or until golden brown on top.

Enjoy!! J
